Pugsy-Wugsy Goes to War: The True Story
Written by: Mrs Lillian Knapp
Pugsy-Wugsy goes so sprightly,
into war and dreams so lightly
He dreams of a world so new and brave,
and that he is the hero who could e'rything save
He wants to be a brave young pup,
in a war to terrible to stop
He goes to places far from home,
places that soon will be like tombs
Galipoli, Verdun, and Somme,
are places he now knows as home
Trenches filled with dirt and mud,
limbs are lost, air filled with blood
Chlorine gas in a cloud of green,
mustard gas without a sheen
Pugsy-Wugsy writhes in cramp,
in a trench so cold and wet and damp
No air in Pugsy-Wugsy's lungs,
A crackling cough his throat did stung
Headaches, eyes made almost blind,
skin that burns and tears his mind
Poor Pugsy-Wugsy, crawling around,
vomiting but barely making a sound
Driven mad by fear and pain,
the Germans one more Brit could claim
Pugsy-Wugsy went to war -
Pugsy-Wugsy is no more.
